Serpent Mound is the largest surviving example of a prehistoric effigy mound in the world. Serpent Mounds incorporates a 4.4-hectare area on Roach’s Point, as well as a 49-hectare area on East Sugar Island. The designated site comprises six distinct areas of archaeological interest, including the Serpent Mounds site, the Alderville site, the Island Centre site, the East Sugar Island site, the Corral site and an unnamed Site BbG m-22. In 2004, FOSM started helping the Serpent Mound Park staff hold public events until 2009. During that time, we helped with astronomy nights, plant sales, reptile days, and more. Lying out in rural Adams County, Ohio, in the United States, upon a plateau overlooking Brush Creek, is a curious mound of earth jutting out of the land, winding about in the unmistakable image of a snake for a full 1348 feet and averaging 3.9 to 4.9 feet in height, and it comes complete with an open-mouthed head and coiled tail, earning it its nickname “The Serpent Mound.” Astonishing piece of ancient history. This earth mound is absolutely massive, and to think it built a thousand years ago by people using little more than sticks and hands to dig is just mind blowing. In a country where something that is a couple of hundred years old feels At 1,348 feet long, Ohio's Great Serpent Mound is the world's largest serpent effigy. Researchers still aren't sure who built it, or when it was constructed, but the burial graves and alignment to lunar and solar arrays provide important clues. The Great Serpent Mound measures approximately 1,300 feet in length and ranges from one to three feet in height. The complex mound is both architectural and sculptural and was erected by settled peoples who cultivated maize, beans and squash and who maintained a stratified society with an organized labor force, but left no written records.
